The M-Enabling Summit (M-E23) is the annual conference and showcase of the Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies (G3ict), held in Washington, DC, to promote accessible technologies and environments for people with disabilities and the elderly. M-E23 offers an international gathering of leading executives and accessibility professionals from government, industry, education, and advocacy organizations.
The Challenge:
The M-Enabling summit had several virtual sessions for people who did not wish to attend the event on-site. The keynotes and virtual sessions were hosted at the conference venue and had to be live-streamed. Individuals with various abilities would watch the M-Enabling Summit Virtual sessions and the keynotes on all three days.
The sessions had to be captured live at the venue in Washington, DC. A portal was needed where users could register for the virtual sessions and log on to the media player where the sessions were live-streamed. The media player and registration portal had to be accessible to a diverse audience and comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1
The Solution:
Capture: Performedia’s production team set up equipment to capture video with onsite ASL interpreters and stream the sessions from the general ballroom and one breakout room at the venue.
Portal:The registration portal m-enabling.performedia.com launched a week before the event allowing users to register for the virtual sessions. The portal complied with the WCAG requirements including seamlessly working with screen readers, usable on various contrast levels and magnification, accessible by the keyboard and alternative input methods.
Accessible Media Player: Performedia built an accessible media player for web and mobile - both landscape view and portrait view. This included a secondary video to display ASL by interpreters who were present at the venue and displayed closed captions in 5 UN languages written by a human captioner for individuals with hearing impairments.
The Result:
The navigation was seamless with keyboard and alternative input methods. The media player including the navigation and captions worked with JAWS, Voiceover, and Narrator to allow people who are visually impaired and/or use screen readers to navigate through the web.
